Intelligent power management controls portable generator

This prototype of an electrical power management system will be the intelligence within Raytheon UK’s Portable Power Generator (PPG) where the PPG is set to be a man-portable unit for use in the field. It is also suitable for use an as auxiliary power unit (APU) within vehicles.

It has been developed in collaboration with key technology partners, and is designed to burn, quietly and with a low thermal profile. A variety of fuels including diesel, kerosene and JP8 aviation (which is smokeless) generates a regulated 28V DC output.

The launch model is provisionally rated at 3kW, and is designed to be used in the field to recharge equipment such as radios, SAT phones, GPS systems and night vision goggles. In-vehicle applications include providing power while on Silent Watch.

The unit’s power management system interfaces with a simple stop/start button, controls and monitors the fuel flow from the two detachable tanks. It also manages an on-board battery, which is used to start the unit and provide short-duration boosts to the combustion-generated power. It also drives an LCD that shows output voltage, output current and engine temperature.

Production versions will also have CAN bus, for integration with a vehicle’s management systems.

Following the announcement of a 2kW technical demonstrator PPG, the company is working on a 3kW proof-of-design model, anticipated to meet the vast majority of known and envisaged field and vehicle applications.

The modularity and scalability of the architecture will allow for other power ratings, up to 5kW, says the company.
