Fairchild today introduces an ultra-compact, next-generation, integrated MOSFET plus driver power stage solution, designated the smart power stage module family. Ideal for applications such as synchronous buck DC-DC converters in high-performance computing and telecom, the SPS family utilises Fairchild’s DrMOS expertise to deliver high efficiency, high power density and high switching frequency.

The SPS family use Fairchild’s high-performance PowerTrench MOSFET technology to reduce ringing and therefore eliminate requirements for a snubber circuit in most buck converter applications. Featuring an integarted approach, the complete switching power stage is optimized for driver and MOSFET dynamic performance, system inductance and power MOSFET RDS(ON). The new power solution offers thermal monitoring, programmable thermal shutdown, Zero Cross Detect circuitry and catastrophic fault detection. Thermal monitoring accurately reports the temperature of the module, while the Programmable Thermal Shutdown feature has an adjustable threshold. These features allow designers to remove negative temperature coefficient circuitry, set the over temperature protection point to accommodate system requirements, and reduce PCB space, component counts and total bill of material costs.

ZCD circuitry auto detects negative inductor current, while Catastrophic Fault Detection latches off the driver’s output when a high-side MOSFET short is detected. This allows the module to enter Diode Emulation Mode to improve the light load efficiency and protects the system from damage.

Less than 3 µA shutdown current maintains the low quiescent power of the system and the Dual Cool package allows the module to dissipate heat. Through the air or use of a heatsink, this heat is dissipated from both the bottom, through PCB, and the top side of the module.

Target applications for the smart power stage module family include processor and memory multiphase regulators in servers, workstations and high-end motherboards, networking and telecom ASIC core voltage regulators, and small form-factor point-of-load voltage regulator modules.

With delivery 8-12 weeks ARO, pricing starts at $1.13 (USD) in 1,00 piece quantities. Samples are available upon request.
