Reducing cost and improving efficiency, the topology used in Ericsson Power Modules' PKM4116ND quarter brick DC/DC converter has been highly optimized to lower the number of components while simultaneously reducing power losses. Enabling systems designers to shorten time-to-market, the PKM4116ND is an industry standard quarter-brick product and is 100% pin-to-pin compatible with similar products available to the market.
/> The PKM4116ND is primarily designed to power radio-applications and is optimized for the new generation of micro cell transmitters requiring a 100W power module with the flexibility to adjust its output voltage within the range 23.8V to 32.8V. The main application area addressed by the PKM416ND is in RFPA (radio frequency power amplifier) and other applications requiring isolation from the 48V system bus voltage, and offering a stable output voltage in a range of 24 to 30V. This product is also suitable for small systems remote feeding power architectures such as in-door Wi-Fi transmitters.

Further optimised for RFPA, the PKM4116ND can be deployed in sealed box applications with its heatsink fixed directly to the host equipment chassis. Using Ericsson's thermal optimization technology, the PKM4116ND's layout has been optimized to distribute the major heat dissipating components, eliminating hot spots and improving cooling through natural thermal conduction from board to cold plate. Thus, cooling through its optional baseplate or through a thermal-pad applied between the PKM4116ND board and the equipment chassis is easily facilitated. This feature, combined with low power losses resulting from a high efficiency topology give the PKM4116ND an unprecedented quality and reliability level when used in sealed-box or in other applications or conditions where natural convection cooling is the only way to dissipate power.

The device's switching and control stages are based on a primary half-bridge and a secondary side full bridge topology and duty-cycle optimized at 30V, guaranteeing a good efficiency across the overall output voltage range. With an input voltage range of 36V to 75V, the PKM4116ND includes comprehensive operational protection such as over-temperature (OTP), output over-voltage (OVP), output short-circuit, and input under voltage shutdown. Output current capacity is 3.3A. Remote control is possible and the device offers an input to output isolation figure of 1500Vdc. The device is RoHS compliant and according to Telcordia SR332, issue 1, black box technique, the PKM4116ND has an impressive predicted MTBF of 1.06 million hours.

The development of micro cells and local transmitters requires an efficient and standardized power solution that relies on a single part number, and one that enables designers to very simply adjust the output voltage to suit the specific characteristics of the power transistor embedded in their power amplifier said Patrick Le Fèvre, Marketing and Communication Director of Ericsson Power Modules. Based on Ericsson Power Modules' highly integrated platform, PKM4116ND has been optimized to simplify its manufacturing, reduce component count with the direct effect to offer customers a very cost efficient power solution when designers are developing new radio-com applications or when upgrading existing systems with more efficient products.
As part of Ericsson Power Modules' PKM4000D series the PKM4116ND's quarter-brick form factor is fully compatible with existing products available on the market and well complements Ericsson Power Modules' portfolio of products designed to power RFPA, adding a quarter-brick to the powerful 700W full-brick PKY4716PI, the 350W half-brick PKJ4316API and to several other variants already addressing this segment.
