MSC Vertriebs GmbH is announcing the availability of the second processor module from its range of nanoRISC embedded modules for high-performance 32-bit microprocessors. Based on the Samsung S5PV210, an ARM Cortex-A8 processor clocked at 800MHz or 1GHz, the module carries up to 1GB DDR2 SDRAM and 4GB NAND Flash memory. The nanoRISC processor modules are 50 x 70 mm in size and cover all important interfaces for embedded applications: LAN, CAN as well as audio, UART, I²C, SPI, Touch and GPIO. Also, the processor’s parallel bus is accessible, and there are interfaces for CF and SD/MMC cards next to the digital camera interface. The graphics outputs can drive HDMI displays at a resolution of up to Full-HD (1,920 x 1,080) und RGB/TTL displays at 1,366 x 768 (HD). The low power consumption of typ. 2.5W enables operation without cooling. The module is available for the full industrial temperature range -40 to +85°C.
Early this year, MSC had revealed its proprietary module standard ”nanoRISC“ and presented the first processor module based on the Samsung S5PC100 at 667 and 833 MHz clock. This module is limited to a graphics resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixel, while the new PV210 module represents a more powerful product in every respect. Both processor modules are fully compatible in hardware and software and can be operated on the same baseboard. RISC-based System design with nanoRISC modules is greatly simplified because the user only has to provide the economic 230-pin MXM connector for the nanoRISC module on the application board. Board Support Packages (BSP) for Linux and Windows CE are available. MSC claims that using these processor modules will result in a drastic reduction of the time to market since the complexity of a GHz design with 32-bit processors remains on the ready-to-run module, and MSC provides the boot loader and all required drivers.

Peter Eckelmann, Product Marketing Manager Embedded Computer Technology of MSC Vertriebs GmbH, adds: „Based on our long experience in the embedded computing market, we see a broad application base for these processor modules. We are targeting developers coming from pure microcontroller designs and wishing to step up, as well as users of the existing x86-based embedded modules such as ETX and Qseven, who are looking for a compact module technology of entry-level performance at a considerably lower price tag.”

Target applications for the new nanoRISC processor module are in visualisation (Digital Signage), POS/POI systems and medical equipment. And, since the module is available in the extended temperature range, it is suited for the whole spectrum of industrial applications. Finally it is a good choice for most battery-powered and portable applications because of its inherent low power consumption.

Samples of the new processor module nanoRISC-5SPV210 are available immediately. A complete and ready-to-run starterkit based on a 3.5“ baseboard, a 7“ WVGA LCD and a suitable power supply is currently being prepared and will become available in the next few weeks.
