A stud-mount version of the EDGS edgewound power resistor from Vishay Intertechnology has been released. Combining a high-reliability design with continuous duty operation up to 85A and a short-time overload of ten times rated power for five seconds, the resistor provides a drop-in replacement for competing solutions.

The device includes a resistance-alloy ribbon wire, coiled on edge and supported on specially designed porcelain insulators. This provides proper turn-to-turn spacing and insulation from threaded stud mounts. The EDGS's open-coil construction accommodates overloads and surges, allowing for efficient heat dissipation. For a reliable electrical connection, the resistor terminals are welded to the resistive wire.

Suitable for pre-charge, discharge, dynamic braking, load testing, and heater applications in industrial drives, locomotives, wind turbines, and harmonic filters, the device features current ratings from 17.2 to 85A and power ratings from 400 to 1600W. RoHS-compliant, the EDGS has a wide resistance range from 0.053 to 5.44Ω, with tolerance of ± 10%.

The EDGS edgewound power resistor can be mounted on brackets supplied by Vishay or in IP-rated enclosures. The company also offers a universal-mounted version of the resistor, the EDGU.
