ACAL Components has introduced SuperCap double-layer capacitors which achieve capacitance values up to 300 Farad. Developed and manufactured by WIMA, SuperCaps can be used to replace, protect or support batteries whilst offering considerably higher discharge currents.
Applications will include automotive systems such as steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire, stability control and battery lifetime-extension in hybrid cars, as well as pitch control in wind turbines, battery-support in diesel-electric drives and energy regeneration in rail systems and short-term storage in Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS).

WIMA SuperCaps are available with rated capacitance values of 100F, 250F and 300F, with discharge currents of 30A, 45A and 50A respectively. The standard rated supply voltage is 2.5V, with 12V and 42V available as custom modules. They are maintenance-free and can be connected in parallel or in series.

SuperCap technology is based on the Helmholtz Principle and uses a double-layer electrochemical as the dielectric and large-surface electrodes of activated carbon to achieve the highest capacitance in the smallest possible volume.
