AVX Corporation, a leading manufacturer of passive components and interconnect solutions, announces the extension of its industry-proven, low profile, high capacitance PulseCap™ tantalum capacitor series to include a 3300µF/ 4V rated device with a low ESR of 55mΩ. PulseCap™ is designed for applications such as PCMCIA/USB wireless express cards where bulk capacitance is needed to boost transmitter power and power back-up capacitor in Solid State Drives.
The latest addition completes the family of 2mm low profile large case size. Moreover, the ‘undertab’ termination style — where traditional ‘J’ leads are replaced by terminations that do not protrude outside of the outline of the case — increases volumetric efficiency and allows parts to be positioned very closely together, delivering significant space savings. The offering also includes capacitors up to 10V rated voltage. The 2200/1500µF / 6.3V PulseCap™ capacitors are available in two different case sizes 4 (7.3 x 6.3 x 2.0mm) and 6 (14.5 x 7.5 x 2.0mm).

The next PulseCap™ option in development uses a conductive polymer as a second electrode, featuring very safe, reduced-ignition failure mode and even lower ESR. Therefore the capacitors are very robust against overloading and thermal runaway. First samples will be available during the first half of the 2011.

PulseCap™ devices are RoHS compliant and capable of withstanding a soldering profile of 3x reflow at 260degC. Operating temperature range is -55 to +125degC. Other applications include wireless data cards, solid state drivers, smart metering and sensors.
These new PulseCap™ capacitors complement AVX‘s BestCap® low ESR devices. In contrast to other large case size, large capacitance devices, PulseCaps are true surface mount devices capable of withstanding lead-free reflow process assembly. They also save more space on a PCB and offer excellent surge robustness.
