Compatible with existing 3Gbps and 6Gbps SAS link rates used in data centre applications, the DS125BR800A multi-protocol repeater has been introduced by Texas Instruments. The company has claimed that this is the industry’s first signal conditioner capable of driving the serial-attached SCSI (SAS-3) protocol.

The highly flexible DS125BR800A supports the PCI Express Gen-1, Gen-2, Gen-3 and SATA 1.5Gbps, 3Gbps and 6Gbps interface standards, enabling equipment manufacturers to employ one device for multiple protocols with data rates up to 12.5Gbps. The 8-channel, unidirectional repeater combats signal impairments caused by insertion loss, jitter, reflections and crosstalk in high-speed enterprise server, storage and router applications.

Consuming just 65mW per channel, the DS125BR800A uses 35% less power than current solutions while doubling the interconnect reach (up to 30" of FR-4 or 8m of copper cable). Supporting a single supply voltage, this multi-protocol repeater reduces cost by eliminating the need for an external reference clock and power supply filter.

Enabling seamless management of the link training protocol, TI's latest repeater features 24-dB input equalisation and 12-dB output de-emphasis compensate for insertion loss. Additionally, the DS125BR800A eliminates software programming, offers multiple configuration options (including pins, SMBus or direct-EEPROM load) and features a flow-through pinout which eases layout.

Engineers can develop a robust system solution by combining the DS125BR800A with the TLK10034 10Gbps SerDes, DS125DF410 retimer, DS80PCI800 PCIe repeater, LMK03806 clock generator, and an LM75A or TMP75 temperature sensor.

TI also offers the DS125BR800AEVM evaluation module (EVM) for a suggested retail price of $499 (USD). It is supplied with an EVM user guide and an IBIS-AMI model, enabling designers to verify board signal integrity and evaluate the device’s signal conditioning features. The TI E2E Community also offers support in the High Speed Interface Forum.

Available now in a 10x5.5mm 54-pin QFN package, the DS125BR800A is priced from $7.45 (USD) each in 1,000 unit quantities.
