Reducing the component count in a variety of stereo speaker applications, such as PCs, docking stations and wireless speakers, Diodes Incorporated have released the PAM8407 Class D audio amplifier. This audio component can drive dual 4Ω speakers at 3W per channel from a 5V supply.

Integrating an advanced 32-step up/down volume control, the PAM8407 offers designers high-quality sound reproduction and simple two key up/down volume control. The audio amplifier ensures low noise, high PSRR and solid THD+N performance thanks to fully differential inputs. The Class D amplifier provides an efficiency of 87%, small external circuit requirement and is supplied in low pin count SO-16 packaging.

Utilising a filter-less output architecture, the Class D amplifier saves space by minimising the number of external components required. Additionally, it provides a lower quiescent current and improved EMI performance. A wide operating voltage range of 2.5-6V makes the amplifier suitable for a four times alkaline cell configuration.

Additionally, the PAM8407 stereo audio amplifier incorporates a range of safeguards to protect it from damage, including auto-recovery short-circuit protection, under-voltage lockout and over-temperature protection.

Diodes Incorporated's PAM8407 stereo Class D audio amplifier is available for $0.18 (USD) each in 100,000 unit quantities.
