Achieving simple audio playback via connection to a speaker, LAPIS Semiconductor, a ROHM Group Company, has introduced a low power MCU. The ML610Q304 integrates an 8-bit low power MCU core, speech synthesis circuit, high efficiency Class-D speaker amplifier, non-volatile memory and oscillator circuit on a single chip.

Voice playback operation is performed using hardware, which significantly lightens the load on the MCU for system control processing, while the high-efficiency Class-D amplifier reduces current consumption during audio playback while maintaining volume. Combining the Class-D amplifier with the low power consumption 8-bit MCU results in higher power efficiency and 40% less current consumption during voice output (compared with conventional analogue Class AB speaker amps, according to LAPIS).

The MCU provides multiple fail-safe functions to improve reliability. Speaker terminal disconnection detection detects no-playback due to disconnection between the MCU and speakers by monitoring for changes in resistance value between the speaker terminals. Speaker terminal short-circuit detection detects no-playback due to short-circuit by monitoring the voltage level of the speaker terminals and shutting down operation to prevent possible damage. Class D speaker amplifier overcurrent prevention ensures that the PWM circuit does not stay fixed at the H level for over a specified amount of time in order to prevent excessive heat generation due to overcurrent.

The monolithic design and high integration reduces the number of parts required and contributes to device miniaturisation with a compact 5x5mm 28-pin WQFN package. The ML610Q304 MCU is suitable for applications such as home appliances, fire alarms, crime prevention devices and industrial equipment.

The ML610Q304 MCU is available now in production quantities. LAPIS also offers a complete support system including a reference board, software development environment, tools and manuals.
