Renesas Technology Europe announced today the availability of the R8C/2J microcontroller, the latest device addition to the R8C/Tiny series of microcontrollers. This low pin count device is based on the existing R8C/Tiny series, which has an innovative 16-bit CPU core and 8-bit bus. Compared to the existing range of over 260 R8C products, this new R8C/2J device features a reduced set of peripheral functions and offers the flash memory options of 2 or 4Kbyte. This makes the devices suitable for cost sensitive functions, such as intelligent watch-dog timer (WDT), power-on reset (POR), low voltage detect (LVD) or as a secondary fail-safe MCU.
The device also includes a single channel UART, an 8-bit multifunction timer with two 8-bit prescalers and a 16-bit input capture/output compare timer. By using the comparator mode, the voltage detection function can be connected to an external reference voltage. The R8C/2J operates in the voltage range of 2.2 to 5.5 V. In additional it has two internal on-chip oscillators. One operates at a low frequency of 125KHz – suitable for driving an independent WDT, and one high frequency oscillator operating at 8MHz. With its shortest instruction execution time of 125ns (at 8MHz) and an embedded 16x16 hardware multiplier the R8C/2J is perfect for a broad range of consumer and household appliances. These devices are also suitable for industrial applications.

Using Renesas’ E8a emulator tool the R8C/2J can be Flash programmed and debugged via the 1-wire interface.
