The Herley-CTI Series phase-locked dielectric resonator oscillators (PDROs)from Aspen Electronics are designed for high reliability, cost critical applications, suiting both commercial and military, satellite and microwave, communications systems.
Key features of these devices are their small size, extremely low phase noise, no subharmonics and high efficiency, achieved by taking advantage of advanced GaAs MESFET and BJT DRO technology, combined with the standard unit’s ability to phase-lock to an external reference, in the 50 to 300MHz range.

Operating from 12 or 15V dc power supplies (8V optionally available), the oscillators feature very low power consumption. Output power is +15dBm, with the units also offering low current levels.

The low profile devices in the series are particularly compact, with overall dimensions of just 50.8 x 47.8 x 15.7mm or 50.8 x 50.8 x 18.5mm depending upon frequency and standard or
flush tuner selection. The XPDRO Series of dual loop versions are only slightly larger, at 57 x 57 x 15.75mm. Both the PDRO and XPDRO are available in the frequency range 3 to 45GHz.

The PDROs are ideal for outdoor use as they feature a wide operating temperature range of –40 to 75oC. The devices are particularly suitable for use as local oscillators in up/down converters for both commercial and military satellite communications systems. Military versions are hermetically sealed, operating in the extended –45 to 85oC range, with field replaceable SMA connectors. Other applications include microwave communications systems and test equipment.

Aspen Electronics Ltd stock the most popular devices, typically standard, external reference (50MHz) units operating at 4.9GHz, 6.3GHz, 6.95GHz, 10.75GHz, 12.8GHz and 13.05GHz. Other more specialised versions can be shipped from Herley-CTI’s US factory in 4 to 8weeks. Units cost from £500 to £1000, depending on specification and volumes required. The devices are RoHS compliant and are covered by a three-year warranty.
