In keeping with the motto of this year’s electronica - ‘Talent meets Industry’ – the Cosima Award was presented on the student day of the fair, Friday 11th November. The competition for college students in the field of microsystem technology honours applications that improve or simplify interaction between man and technology in various aspects of life.

This year's submissions included a robot that can trim eyebrows with a thread, a microchip-controlled refrigerator that monitors the shelf-life of foods and reminds the user via smartphone, and an energy self-sufficient trip-data tracking system with theft warning and tracking for bicycles.

The results were as follows:

Fifth place: Smart Condition Monitoring, providing cost-effective solutions for the ‘smart home’.

Fourth place: ZHI-Fridge, a monitoring system in refrigerators aiming to reduce food wastage and promote healthy eating.

Third place: AETSURA, a robotic arm to provide automatic eyebrow threading, helping those with physical disabilities.

Second place: Body Warn, a self-sufficient body sensor providing an energy-efficient emergency call system for persons at risk of being injured.

First place: Ghostbuster, a system to alert ‘ghost drivers’ – those who drive on the wrong side of the road.

AETSURA, Body Warn and Ghostbuster received a cash prize of 500, 750 and 1000€ respectively. All three teams have also been entered into the international iCan competition, taking place in Beijing, China in August 2017.
