On the last day of electronica 2014, which takes place from 11th to 14th November in Munich, college students and graduates can gain insight into the everyday working life of an electronics engineer. Student Day has been organised to address continuing technological advancements in the electronics sector. On this dedicated day, nine teams and their inventions will also compete for the COSIMA Award.

electronica have organised the event alongside the VDE Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies and the semica job exchange. At the electronica Forum in Hall A3, a panel discussion involving company representatives will provide students with information about job roles, applications and trainee programmes. A networking lunch will follow the discussion, providing students with the opportunity make contacts with personnel managers from the companies that are participating in the programme.

On Student Day, the winners of the 2014 COSIMA will also be honoured. The competition for microsystem technology is sponsored by the VDE with support from the Federal Ministry for Education and Research. Inventions for various aspects of life will be presented by nine student teams to the public and a panel of judges. Examples of inventions designed for the household include a shower head that collects water-consumption data, an application which optimises working with a handheld drill, a mechanism that allows a vacuum-cleaner robot to climb steps and a ladder which warns the user about hazardous situations.

Other examples of these inventions include an intelligent bicycle light that reacts to ambient light and cycling behaviour, and an accident camera which recognises parking damage and vandalism, both of whch enhance safety and security in traffic. Technologies designed for the healthcare sector are also among the inventions, and include a wheelchair that can be controlled using head movements, a system which recognises unfavourable pressure on joints and a solar-operated UV stick that analyses water quality.
