Three TFT displays designed for use in outdoor environments have been released by KOE. The 7.0” TX18D203VM2BAA, the 8.0” TX20D200VM2BAB and the 10.4” TX26D200VM2BAB all feature high brightness, white LED backlights. All three displays have a brightness rating of 1500cd/m² which allows them to be used in environments with high levels of ambient light.

Many TFT LCDs are unsuitable for use in bright or outdoor environments due to insufficient backlight brightness and the resulting poor image readability. KOE's high brightness LCD display modules are designed specifically for use under high ambient light conditions. The 1500cd/m² LED backlights ensure a high quality display image is maintained even under direct sunlight. The new display modules also feature an anti-glare polariser coating which helps to disperse light in multiple directions effectively eliminating reflections and therefore making them suitable for outdoor and direct sunlight applications.

The 7.0” and 8.0” displays feature WVGA (800x480px) resolution and a wide 15:9 aspect ratio. The 10.4” display has a SVGA (800x600px) resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio.

The 10.4” TX26D200VM2BAB has a contrast ratio of 800:1 and a brightness rating of 1500cd/m² allow bright, colourful display images to be presented. The white LED backlight has a 70K hour lifetime to half brightness. A 20-pin LVDS data interface supports 8-bit RGB which enables a colour palette of up to 16.7M colours. The 10.4” module has mechanical outline dimensions of 230.0x180.2x10.1mmm and an active display area of 211.2x158.4mm.

The 8.0” TX20D200VM2BAB has mechanical outline dimensions 189.0x122.0x10.2mm and an active display area of 174.0x104.4mm. A 20-pin LVDS data interface supports 6-bit RGB and enables a colour palette of 262K colours. A contrast ratio of 800:1 and a brightness rating of 1500cd/m² ensure a high level of display readability under all ambient light conditions. The LED backlight has an estimated lifetime of 70K hours to half brightness.

The 7.0” TX20D203VM2BAA has a contrast ratio of 600:1 and a brightness rating of 1500cd/m² which ensure display images are colourful, clear and concise. The LED backlight has an estimated lifetime of 40K hours to 50% brightness. A 40-pin CMOS data interface supports 6-bit RGB which enables a colour palette of up to 262K colours. The display module has mechanical outline dimensions of 165.0x113.0x7.5mm and an active display area of 152.4x91.44mm.

All three TFT display modules support an operating temperature range of -30 to +80°C ensuring guaranteed operation in extreme temperature environments.

KOE is targeting a number of varied vertical markets with its high brightness TFT displays including public information systems, ticketing equipment, marine navigation systems, in-vehicle interfaces, consumer information systems, POS displays and industrial instrumentation.

Mark Stephenson, Technical Marketing Manager, KOE Europe, said: "The use of TFT displays in electronic systems and equipment continues to increase. Displays are being used in a wide variety of different environments which can sometimes mean the display image is not always legible. KOE's new high brightness TFT modules are specified with a brightness rating of 1500nits which ensures that a high quality display image readability is maintained under all conditions."
