In our modern society, many people spend a lot of time in front of a screen. The diversity of monitors on offer these days means pretty much anyone can find what they need, and in this article MMD, brand license partner for Philips monitors, explains what to look for to put your mind and body at ease. Graphic designers, programmers, financial experts, and office workers - take note!

  • Back and neck pain: To avoid physical complaints and make screen-time more comfortable, ergonomic features that support good posture should be your primary focus when choosing a monitor.
    • A height adjustable stand is a good place to start. Lower bezel-to-table heights tend to maximise reading comfort and the stand lets you match the monitor to your line of vision.
    • The Philips SmartErgoBase offers even more variations: Its height, swivel, tilt and rotation angle adjustments position the monitor for maximum comfort that can ease the physical strains of a long workday. It even lets monitors be lowered to almost desk level. A welcome side effect: it reduces cable clutter for a tidy, professional workspace.
  • Weary eyes: Who hasn’t experienced eye-fatigue after staring at a screen for a long time? So the next step in establishing the perfect work environment is to reduce the exhausting effects of poor lighting and potentially harmful shortwave blue light.
    • Shortwave blue light may cause eye damage and affect vision over time. Philips SoftBlue technology stops certain blue light at the source by altering the hardware, retaining original colour. This is in contrast to filter-based methods that cover screens with glass, tinging colours yellow. At best, this detracts from the viewing experience; at worst it makes the picture useless. Another way to reduce shortwave blue light is LowBlue Mode, a smart software technology.
    • Flicker-free technology regulates brightness and reduces flicker for more comfortable viewing. Due to the way brightness is controlled on displays with LED backlighting, some users detect a flicker on the screen, which quickly leads to eye fatigue. The 'Flicker-free' technology applies a new brightness control solution for more visual comfort. Another feature to make especially reading more comfortable is EasyRead mode which provides a paper-like reading experience.
  • Cable mess: Too many cables and too few ports to connect all of them are a big annoyance for desk workers. These features can help:
    • USB-C is especially suited to users with ultra-book type devices. It turns the monitor into a hub, making the most of limited connectivity and flex work places. USB-C grants access to peripherals connected to the monitor and needs only a single SuperSpeed USB cable to transmit video and audio and connect to the Internet and Intranet.
    • Multi-monitor setups increase productivity and allow for seamless multitasking. Monitors that allow Daisy Chaining declutter system configurations. In this set-up, a series of displays is connected using only a single DisplayPort cable from one to the next.
  • Insecure webcams: Webcams are a fast, simple way to stay in touch with colleagues and partners around the world. But they also pose a risk: Every webcam is a window into your company. If breached by hackers, it could be used to create an unauthorised access point. Pop-up webcams offer all the convenience with a fraction of the risk: The webcam can be popped up when it is required for meetings, and tucks neatly away when it is not in use.
  • Ecological affects: More and more people try to make green decisions when buying a new technology product. Picking a monitor with eco-friendly technologies helps minimise CO2 and other environmental effects.
    • PowerSensor lowers energy consumption by up to 80% and helps reduce CO2 emissions by detecting whether you are in front of the monitor or not.
    • Mercury is one of the most toxic natural substances, affecting humans and animals. Choose a mercury-free display from the Philips LED monitor range to lower the environmental impact of your devices.

These monitor features are key to making the most of longer screen times. Let them help you stay comfortable, engaged and productive – no matter how long the job takes.
