SOMNIUM Technologies, a Freescale Proven Partner, has announced the general availability of version 2.0 of its unique Device-aware Resequencing Tools (DRT) software development environment for Freescale Kinetis MCUs. DRT 2.0 brings further improvements to DRT's patented resequencing optimisations, a significant revision in the Eclipse IDE, and full compatibility with the latest version of Freescale's Kinetis Design Studio (KDS) IDE.

DRT fully supports Freescale's software enablement solutions, including Processor Expert, Kinetis SDK, MQX RTOS, Sensor Fusion Toolbox and demonstration applications from the Freescale community website. Using unmodified source code and identical build options to Freescale KDS, DRT 2.0 provides significant savings for precious on-chip ROM and RAM resources and a reduction in energy consumption whilst maintaining system performance.

Independent benchmarks show DRT 2.0 can enable performance increases of over 15% with energy reductions of up to 20%, whilst also reducing usage of precious on-chip RAM and ROM resources by up to 40%. These savings are achieved automatically, enabling the use of lower-priced Kinetis devices and saving development and production costs.

Version 2.0 of the DRT IDE uses the latest Luna version of the Eclipse IDE, and adds new features for debugging and improved ease of use. It also adds support for automatic conversion of projects from version 3.0 of the Freescale KDS, and integration with the latest versions of Freescale's Processor Expert and Kinetis SDK. DRT also supports CodeWarrior project conversion for users migrating to the latest Kinetis tools and devices.

Unlike traditional tools that only consider the ARM Cortex processor, DRT is aware of the coupling of the processor and its memory system, automatically applying a new series of device-specific optimisations. This makes the program dramatically smaller, faster and more efficient, saving significant development time and money.

Traditional commercial tools use the same GNU ARM Launchpad tools as KDS 3.0 and so do not offer KDS users any size, energy or performance benefits. Other commercial tools use non-GNU compatible technology which require time consuming, expensive and risky source code changes, and do not provide full compatibility with Freescale's software enablement.

DRT is unique in providing technical and usability benefits whilst being fully KDS compatible. This makes it a suitable upgrade for Kinetis Design Studio users seeking the best results and full technical support.

Dave Edwards, CEO/CTO, SOMNIUM, said: “SOMNIUM is bringing a whole new approach to the embedded software development tools sector. Our ‘optimised for Freescale’ SOMNIUM DRT products provide a seamless upgrade path from KDS IDE and CodeWarrior for Kinetis to enable embedded systems developers to introduce new products to market faster, with lower associated costs and increases in both performance and energy efficiency”
