Renesas Electronics Corporation today announced its support of the newly released Microsoft Windows Embedded Compact 7 operating system for the company's systems-on-chip (SoCs) including the R-Car series of SoCs to offer new functionality and a development environment that supports the quick creation of small, smart, securely connected devices. Standard, familiar tools extend the reach that Windows developers have into new categories of small, powerful devices that easily can be integrated with other Windows-based solutions across the enterprise.
By applying standard, familiar tools, system designers using Renesas Electronics' SoCs can continue to enjoy the benefits that have accrued from the company's 15-year history of working with Microsoft Windows Embedded software platforms and tools. This collaboration with Microsoft indicates that Renesas Electronics' powerful, affordable SoCs continue to work superlatively with the latest software platform from Microsoft Windows Embedded and enables devices using these technologies: connectivity to rich media, PCs, servers, and online services and information that customers expect from their devices.

Windows Embedded Compact 7 provides resources for designers, developers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to bring high-performing, reliable and differentiated devices to market more quickly with the latest tools and technology including Internet Explorer with Adobe Flash 10.1 integrated; and integrated development tools such as Platform Builder, Visual Studio, Expression Blend, and Silverlight for Windows Embedded user interface framework.

Renesas Electronics' family of powerful, economical SoCs coupled with Windows Embedded Compact 7 allows designers of embedded systems to improve productivity by bringing innovative products to market faster and at lower cost. The familiar, industry-standard Visual Studio tools together with powerful processors and the latest software facilitate quick creation of the next generation of small, powerful, connected devices in industries as varied as medical, retail and industrial automation, and device categories such as thin client and consumer electronics.

“Windows Embedded Compact 7 delivers the latest technologies for building the next generation of specialized devices,” said D'Arcy Salzmann, senior product manager for Windows Embedded at Microsoft. “We are excited to work with Renesas Electronics to bring developers and designers a powerful real-time OS and a full tools suite, enabling an integrated, streamlined development experience that helps speed devices to market.”

“Renesas Electronics' commitment to support Windows Embedded goes back to the early days of Windows CE 1.0,” said Hideaki Chaki, senior vice president, 2nd SoC Business Unit, Renesas Electronics Corporation. “The result of this commitment is reflected in Renesas Electronics having more than 50 percent market share (Note 1) in Asia for Windows Embedded solutions.
