A PSU design tool, developed by Power Integrations, is now accessible as a cloud-based app. Previously, designers could only download the PI Expert Suite to a local PC or workstation. The cloud-based app allows designers to access the design tool from any internet browser, ensuring that they are using the most up-to-date version.

The software generates a complete schematic of the power supply, even specifying the transformer design before then linking to transformer manufacturers. A heatsink calculation and optimisation tool helps designers make layout and mechanical prototyping decisions by providing an estimation of the thermal design requirements for a new power supply. The software also provides enhanced PCB layout recommendations based on the chosen IC device and package, enabling designers to minimise trace-induced EMI and board area while maximising electrical noise immunity and surge tolerance. Together, these features reduce the time to first prototype and the number of prototype iterations required to finish a product, speeding time-to-market.

Peter Vaughan, Director, Applications Engineering, Power Integrations, commented: “The cloud-based version of PI Expert Suite is almost like having a Power Integrations engineer on your team. It is loaded with easy-to-use wizard interfaces that help designers input specifications and optimise parameters. The software then uses real-world data to analyse thousands of design options to determine the most appropriate choice. Now that PI Expert Suite is usable in real time and online, designers can use the tool anytime they have an open browser and internet access.”
