Renesas Technology Europe and Segger today announced the launch of emWIN, an embedded graphical user interface (GUI), and embOS, a real-time operating system (RTOS) for Renesas’ SH7203 SuperH microcontroller. Together, emWin and embOS, provide customers the ability to develop graphical applications for the SuperH device with ease.
emWin, one of the most efficient and comprehensive embedded GUI available, helps developers beat their development time-lines and design budgets. Written in ANSI C, it supports any type of graphical display from a simple graphics device up to high-end graphics applications with semi-transparency, anti-aliasing and widgets. A windows simulation package, that can be used to write and test the entire user interface on the PC, is included. This provides a convenient method of debugging as well as easing hardware independent development.

embOS is a zero interrupt latency, high-performance RTOS that has been optimized for minimum memory consumption in both RAM and ROM. Its highly modular structure ensures that only those functions that are needed are linked, keeping the ROM size very small. Tasks can be easily created and made to safely communicate with each other using a range of communication mechanisms such as semaphores, mailboxes, and events. Interrupt Service Routines (ISRs) can also take advantage of this communications approach.

To aid the development and support of SH7203 applications, a Renesas Starter Kit (RSK), the SH7203RSK+ is available. This tool is the ideal starting point for development but is also sufficiently powerful to enable full debugging and development. It comes with Renesas’ E10A debugger, a power supply and a USB stick. It also includes the Renesas C compiler and High-performance Embedded Workshop. Most importantly the board also contains a QVGA TFT display that is perfect for use with the emWIN software.

The combination of embOS, emWin on the SH7203RSK+ from Renesas provides customers with probably the most powerful solution available today”, says Rolf Segger, CEO at SEGGER.
