In GPS applications, the LNA is normally placed close to the antenna as the GPS signal received from the GPS satellite tends to be quite weak and needs the LNA to amplify it. This can be achieved by using either a one stage amplifier (about 15dB) or a two stage amplifier (27dB). Two stages increases the amplification capabilities but is often combined with the downside of increasing the noise figure and the power consumption. However, unlike other LNAs, which mainly use either GaAs, SiGe or SiGe BiCMOS processes, the new XC2404 two stage LNA from Torex has been developed using a 0.13m CMOS process which results in an extremely low power consumption figure of only 12mW (Fixed Bias mode).
