National Instruments Awards $1 Million to Advance Medical Device Development Since 2008

National Instruments today announced that it has awarded $1 million USD in software, support and training to medical device manufacturers through its medical device grant program. Since the program began in 2008, 59 grant recipients from around the world have used technology such as the NI LabVIEW graphical system design platform to reduce the cost and complexity of medical device development and quickly create functional prototypes that help prove their inventions. National Instruments also announced that it is continuing the grant program in 2010 and accepting applications until June 30.

National Instruments has introduced new RF vector signal generators (VSGs) and vector signal analysers (VSAs) in two-channel, three-channel and four-channel versions for multichannel multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) RF design and test applications. The NI PXIe-5663E 6.6 GHz two-, three- and four-channel RF VSA and NI PXIe-5673E 6.6 GHz two-, three- and four-channel RF VSG versions, based on PXI Express, incorporate a shared local oscillator (LO) architecture to achieve true phase coherency between each RF port, which facilitates more accurate channel-to-channel phase measurements in a variety of RF test applications.

National Instruments Creates Grant Program to Support the Texas Emerging Technology Fund

National Instruments today announced the creation of the NI Texas Emerging Technology Grant Program, which provides software and training services to companies that receive investments from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund (ETF). NI created the grant to support the ETF, which the Texas Legislature and Texas Governor Rick Perry created in 2005 to help expedite the development and commercialization of new technologies created in Texas. Companies who receive ETF funding in 2010 are prequalified for the NI Texas Emerging Technology Grant, and those who received funding in previous years are encouraged to apply. NI is also accepting applications from companies who qualify for an ETF grant but have not yet received funding.

Panasonic Selects National Instruments Products to Test Toughbook Laptop PCBs

National Instruments today announced that Panasonic engineers are using NI hardware and software products for the automated testing of new computer PCBs, including those in the new Toughbook rugged laptops. Panasonic has combined NI PXI modular hardware instrumentation with NI LabVIEW graphical development software and NI TestStand test management software to create a streamlined automated test system that has decreased the cost of system development and maintenance. National Instruments has announced more than 8000 instrument drivers available through the NI Instrument Driver Network (IDNet) that make it easy to connect and control stand-alone instruments. IDNet is the industry's largest source of instrument drivers and easy-to-use software optimised for instrument control, including NI LabVIEW, LabWindowsTM/CVI and Measurement Studio for Microsoft Visual Studio. National Instruments has announced its collaboration with Test System Strategies, Inc. (TSSI), inventor of the Waveform Generation Language (WGL), on a new software tool that is compatible with NI LabVIEW graphical system design software. National Instruments reported quarterly revenue for Q1 2009 of $158 million, representing an 18 percent year-over-year decline. Net income for Q1 was $0.4 million. Non-GAAP net income was $3.1 million, with non-GAAP fully diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.04. The company's non-GAAP results exclude the impact of both stock-based compensation and the amortization of acquisition-related intangibles. National Instruments has introduced a new family of open, FPGA-based hardware for the PXI platform. The NI FlexRIO product family is the industry's first commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solution to provide engineers with the flexibility of NI LabVIEW FPGA technology combined with high-speed, instrument-class I/O. With NI FlexRIO, engineers can add custom signal processing algorithms to their PXI-based field-programmable gate array (FPGA) hardware. National Instruments has announced a new line of M Series USB data acquisition (DAQ) devices with 18-bit analogue input accuracy at sampling rates up to 625 kS/s. The NI USB-6281 and USB-6289 feature an 18-bit ADC, which provides a 4X increase in resolution over traditional 16-bit devices, equivalent to more than 5½ digits of resolution for DC measurements. These devices also offer enhanced analogue output channels that feature programmable range and offset settings. Engineering students from the Robotics & Mechanisms Laboratory (RoMeLa) at Virginia Tech have developed a bipedal humanoid robot using the National Instruments LabVIEW graphical system design platform. The Dynamic Anthropomorphic Robot with Intelligence (DARwIn) was originally developed to study human locomotion for the research and development of prosthetic limbs. DARwIn achieves full range of motion and accurately imitates human movement so effectively that it was quickly modified to play soccer for entry into RoboCup, an international robotic soccer competition created to promote research in robotics, artificial intelligence and related fields. As a result, it has been accepted as the first-ever U.S. entry into RoboCup in the humanoid division.

NI Reports Q3 Revenue of $184.4 Million

National Instruments has reported record quarterly revenue of $184.4 million in the third quarter ended Sept. 30, 2007, up 12.4 percent as compared to Q3 2006. Diluted earnings per share (EPS) for Q3 2007 was 27 cents. This is above the midpoint of NI guidance of 24 cents to 29 cents per share. Net income was $21.5 million, up 15 percent from Q3 2006. For Q3 2007, operating margin and net margin were 13.3 percent and 11.7 percent, respectively.

The PXI Systems Alliance (www.pxisa.org) today announced the 10th anniversary of the PXI (PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation) specification, the PC-based modular I/O platform for test, measurement and control systems. The PXI standard was introduced in 1997 as a modular instrumentation platform for measurement and automation applications that require high performance and a rugged industrial form factor. With PXI, engineers and scientists can select chassis, controllers and modules from multiple vendors and integrate them into a single PXI system. Today there are more than 1,500 PXI products available from over 70 companies, including Agilent Technologies, Geotest, Keithley, National Instruments and Pickering.

University of California Teaches Graphical System Design at NI's Embedded Systems Laboratory

NI Announces PXI Products with 600 MBytes/s Sustained Data Streaming

Engineers can use the newest National Instruments PXI products to sustain higher data streaming rates than ever before possible with an industry-standard test and measurement platform. The combination of these new PXI products, based on the PXI Express specification, include modular instruments, an embedded controller and RAID hard drive arrays, offers sustained hard drive recording and playback at 600 MBytes/s. With these new data streaming capabilities, engineers can achieve higher sustained acquisition and generation rates, reduce test times and meet new application challenges. Previous data streaming applications required dedicated, proprietary systems typically costing tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

NASA Uses NI LabVIEW FPGA to Test Advanced Space Telescope

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), NASA's next-generation successor to the Hubble, has passed a crucial milestone toward its 2013 launch with the help of National Instruments (Nasdaq: NATI) LabVIEW FPGA. An important element of the JWST is the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec), which is equipped with more than 250,000 microshutters designed to observe thousands of distant galaxies to better understand the origins of the universe. These microshutters are actually microelectromechanical system (MEMS) devices that physically open and close for light exposure, similar to shutters on a camera. Engineers at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center have successfully tested the microshutters using LabVIEW FPGA to control the shutters in a test chamber.

National Instruments Reports Quarterly Revenue of $172 Million

National Instruments (Nasdaq: NATI) reported quarterly revenue in the first quarter of $172 million, up 11 percent from Q1 2006. Diluted earnings per share (EPS) for Q1 2007 was 23 cents with net income of $19 million. This represents a 51 percent increase in net income compared to Q1 2006.
