Broadcom has announced two products for deployment in China, an HD STB SoC for China's free-to-air satellite market, and a cost efficient, small form-factor DOCSIS 3.0 STB engineered for the country's growing cable market.

As the momentum to deploy HD programming in China increases, Broadcom's BCM7228 chip enables satellite TV operators to roll out more advanced services and additional HD satellite broadcast transmissions through the integration of Audio Video Coding Standard (AVS+) decompression. The BCM7228 SoC is compliant with the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television standards for compression. It also provides state-of-the-art Conditional Access (CA) and Digital Rights Management (DRM) security to protect the rights of content providers.

The offering is designed to deliver more advanced features to cable subscribers, including over-the-top video content, broadband data services, and both wired and/wireless home networks. Broadcom's cable STB design includes DOCSIS 3.0 capabilities, AVS+ decoding support for HD content and is TVOS-compatible. These features support increasing bandwidth transmission requirements for subscriber applications and cable services on China's C-DOCSIS network, and provide operators with easy-to-install equipment for home subscribers.

The compact DOCSIS 3.0 cable STB platform combines Broadcom's BCM7250 STB SoC integrated with Mobile High-Definition (MHL) 2.0 and the BCM3383, a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem SoC.

"Broadcom has developed customised STB technology for operators in China to upgrade their subscribers to HD satellite TV services at minimal cost," said Dan Marotta, Executive Vice President & General Manager, Broadband & Connectivity Group, Broadcom. "Our latest offering is a highly secure chip that supports the advancement of the Chinese satellite TV market from standard to high definition broadcasts, which is forecast to grow steadily over the next five years."

"Broadcom's small form-factor cable set-top box design reduces system cost and complexity, ultimately lowering development and deployment costs for China cable operators while increasing value-added services to home subscribers," said Rich Nelson, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Broadband & Connectivity Group, Broadcom. "With integrated DOCSIS 3.0, our device enables advanced IP-based home networking for consumers to receive enhanced voice, data and video services across multiple devices in the home, and improves security features."
