Using location-based tracking technology is something that Zebra Technologies has been using for some time to help industries as diverse as industrial manufacturing, transportation and logistics to unlock business value. However, now the company’s RFID technology is being employed by the NFL as part of its ambitious Next Generation Stats initiative.

The company was selected by NFL to be its Official On-Field Player Tracking Provider in an attempt to revolutionise the way sports are watched, analysed, coached and played.

The Zebra Sports Solution involves each player wearing two small sensors (one under each shoulder pad), that emits radio frequencies 15 times per second. Receivers mounted within the stadium read signals from all the players on the field, pinpointing players’ positions, tracking speed, acceleration and distance travelled in real time.

Algorithms aggregate players’ stats from the data and displays it one analytics software, which allows Zebra staff to add context to that data, also in real time. A robust range of player metrics can be generated on proprietary software dashboards that are usable across professional and consumer applications. The data can be instantly interpreted by media producers to create graphics for viewers across a variety of digital media channels and devices from jumbotrons to smartphones and tablets.

There are numerous benefits of utilising this technology. It can be vital in assisting coaches and trainers to evaluate players. Athletes can be kept at peak performance by developing bespoke training programmes based on individual metrics and fatigue thresholds. The proprietary software also enables NFL coaches to synchronise with official game day data and integrate it in order to quickly optimise training.

The solution also provides a consistent, data-forward analysis method, which allows coaches to strategise in-game and in-practice using the real time data to adapt and be nimble in play-calling. Whether assessing route running patterns, evaluating grouping and formation, analysing the separation distances on pass coverage or assessing quarterback pressure, applications can be highly customised.

The proprietary real time player tracking solution can also be used to enhance the viewing experience for spectators through television broadcasts, mobile engagement and in-stadium displays, enabling fans to view never before seen real time player data and new performance insights. Fans can receive live broadcast graphics illustrating player speed, acceleration, distances gained and in-depth analytics, including how closely receivers are covered and how this separation distance changes over a play, and how tightly quarterbacks are pressured. This increased immersive viewing experience can increase fan attentiveness, connectivity and the understanding fans have of players, teams and on-field strategy.
