Microsemi Corporation has announced the availability of its PDS-104GO outdoor Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) switch, expanding the company’s industry-leading PoE product offering to enable the connection of four powered devices to a network.

The switch delivers 60W of power per device over standard Ethernet cabling to outdoor devices such as wireless local-area network access points (WLAN), Internet protocol (IP) cameras, point-to-point microwave radio and small cells—and is suitable for outdoor deployments in several industries including education, transportation and government. Microsemi will be showcasing the device in Europe at the Cisco Live event in Berlin 15-18th of February and in the U.S. at ISC West in Las Vegas 5-8th of April.

“We are pleased to offer Microsemi’s first 4+1 port PoE switch with a small form-factor pluggable (SFP) uplink, providing customers with greater flexibility, longer networks, plug-and-play installation and the needed outdoor functionality including extended temperature range, IP 66 and integrated surge protection,” said Sani Ronen, Director of Product Management, Microsemi’s PoE systems. “As a leader in PoE technology, the PDS-104GO demonstrates our continued commitment to innovation by offering a compelling and highly integrated solution for IP-based outdoor installations that brings new capabilities to the market.”

The PDS-104GO addresses the increasing power needs of outdoor PoE applications which are connected to several million ports per year, with an estimated serviceable available market (SAM) of approximately $300m per year according to market research firm Infonetics.

With simple and straightforward deployment, the IEEE802.3at-compliant switch is IP66-rated and can be installed in outdoor environments without the need to open the unit during installation. The switch delivers PoE power up to 60W per device and enables remote monitoring and control of the device’s status, including remote reset. The PDS-104GO also extends the reach between the switch and powered devices (PDs) by an additional 100m, to a maximum of 200m, a major benefit for many applications. In addition, the device offers lightening protection to the switch itself as well as to the indoor network.
