A 3A µModule step-down regulator, offered in an ultrathin 1.8mm profile LGA package with a 6.25x6.25mm footprint, has been released by Linear Technology. Measuring less than 2mm with solder paste, the LTM4623 meets the height restrictions of many PCIe and AMC for AdvancedTCA carrier cards in embedded computing systems.

The small size and low height allow the device to be mounted on the backside of the PCB, freeing space on the topside for components such as memory and FPGAs. Operating from 4 to 20V input supplies, the LTM4623 precisely regulates an output voltage of 0.6-5.5V with 1.5% maximum total DC output voltage error. The device is suitable for ultra-dense data storage, gateway controllers and 40-100Gb/s network equipment.

The LTM4623 requires a footprint of 0.5cm2 on dual-sided PCB or less than 1cm2 on a single-sided PCB. One input capacitor and one output capacitor, a resistor to set VOUT, and a small capacitor for VOUT tracking and soft-star, are required for a circuit. The device operates from input supplies as low as 2.375V, with an auxiliary 5V bias. The operating efficiency for converting 12VIN to 1.5VOUT and 3.3VOUT at 3A is 80% and 88%, respectively. For 12VIN to 1.5VOUT, power loss is is 1.1W, resulting in only a 24°C rise in junction temperature. The LTM4623, which operates from a -40 to 125°C temperature range, is priced at $6.41 each and sold in 1,000-piece quantities.
