A range of stepper motors with IP68 protection ratings has been introduced by Astrosyn International Technology. Intended for operation in harsh, wet environments, the F87 series have been tested underwater to a pressure of 1 bar - corresponding to a water depth of 10 m.

The Nema size 34 motors are ideal for use in the food processing industry, where process equipment has to be regularly washed down and decontaminated. Other applications include in equipment that is submerged or exposed to heavy rain.

If required, the motors can be supplied with special coatings for protection against corrosion or marine conditions. Another possible application area is in machine tools, where the presence of cutting fluid represents a demanding environment.

This level of protection is unusual in stepper motors, and makes them invaluable for specialist applications, said Simon Hunt, Astrosyn technical sales director.

All models have a step angle of 1.8 degrees, and holding torques range from 1.8 to 7.2 Nm. Shafts may be single or double ended.
