Today sees the release of Lanner Electronics’ new FW-8771 1U rackmount Network Security Platform, based on the 4th generation Intel Core processor family, formerly codenamed “Haswell”.

“The new architecture from Intel delivers marked improvements in power efficiency and performance,” said Terence Chou, Senior Director at Lanner. “Compared with the previous generation we are seeing 40% boosts in performance-per-wattwhile platform improvements have doubled I/O performance and provided other under-the-hood operational enhancements. We expect to see enthusiastic take-up of the FW-8771 across the board, but particularly from customers in the wireless controller and UTM (Unified Threat Management) segments.”

The Intel AES New Instruction (AES-NI) enhancements included with the FW-8771 use hardware-based acceleration to encrypt and decrypt data. The improvements in performance allow network appliances to operate at ultra-high speed. Many of the leading downstream networking equipment providers have made AES-NI a cornerstone of their next product generation.

Most versions of the FW-8771 support 3 pairs of LAN ports with 3rd Generation LAN Bypass function. Bypass ports allow users to experience uninterrupted network traffic even if a single in-line appliance hangs. With the ability via the PCIe 3.0 module to support up to 24 GbE ports, or up to 8 ports at 10GbE, and a future upgrade path to 40GbE, port density is another key advantage of Lanner’s new platform. The FW-8771 also supports Error-Correcting Code memory technology, a server-grade feature that can identify and correct memory corruption automatically, making system performance more secure and stable.

Compared to the previous generation, the FW-8865, the FW-8771 offers greatly improved performance and reduced power consumption, while incorporating the newest Intel microarchitecture. This platform is compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2 to 2012, with support for other operating systems to follow. The FW-8771 will bewas on show at the Lanner booth (#K0828) at Computex from June 4-8 in Taipei, Taiwan, along with a range of other networking and computing products.
