Claimed to be the industry’s first 24V, sinusoidal, sensorless, BLDC motor driver, the DRV10983 has been announced by Texas Instruments. The motor driver uses 180°, sinusoidal, sensorless technology to reduce audible noise by up to 75% compared to competing solutions for applications such as cooling fans, ceiling fans, blowers and small appliances.

Using a configurable, 3A driver integrating control logic, the DRV10983 allows customers to quickly tune motors. This code-free configurability eliminates the need for complex MCU coding or motor knowledge, allowing designers to tune a wide range of motors for optimal performance and reliable start-up through simple register settings. Without annoying clicks or pops on start-up, the pure sinusoidal operation combines with advanced start-up algorithms to reduce pure tone harmonics by up to 25dBA.

Integrated power FETs, sensorless control logic and optional 100mA, 3.3 or 5V step-down converter saves board space, development time and systems costs. Design complexity is reduced and system reliability increased through advanced on-chip protection, including anti-voltage surge over-voltage, over-current, over-temperature, shoot-through, under-voltage lock-out and advanced five-stage rotor lock protection.

TI also offers the DRV10983EVM evaluation module for $99. The sensorless solution for running three-phase BLDC motors includes a BLDC motor, GUI, schematics and Gerber files.

Supplied in a 24-pin, 8x6mm HTSSOP, the DRV10983 is available now from $1.19 in 1,000 unit quantities.
