The MG04ACA and MG04SCA 6TB SATA and SAS models have been released by Toshiba Electronics Europe, expanding its MG04 series of 3.52" HDDs. For seamless integration with latest-gen data centre infrastructure, the SAS interface HDD provides 12Gbit/s transfer rates and enhanced power management features. The MG04 series is specifically designed for midline and nearline business critical workloads.

Compared to the company’s MG03 4TB models, the MG04 6TB models offer a 50% increase in maximum capacity and a 30% increase in sustained data rate. Both industry-standard 4K native and 512e Advanced Format sector technologies, for optimum performance in the latest generation servers and storage systems, are supported by the MG04ACA and MG04SCA. Emulated 512e Advanced Format sector technology performs best in legacy applications requiring 512 sector lengths using aligned-write environments.

Helping to protect against data loss and improve performance and data reliability, the HDDs feature Toshiba persistent write cache technologies. To enable sanitise ‘instant’ cryptographic erase, specific SAS and SATA command support is also available.

Improving application response times, the MG04SCA and MG04ACA spin at 7,200RPM, delivering nearline-class seek performance. The higher capacity per spindle saves rack space and reduces the footprint and operational burden of business-critical servers and storage systems, helping to optimise total cost of ownership in high-density scale-out environments. Compared to the 4TB drive generation, the 6TB models provide 50% better power efficiency.

“Our customers expect to benefit from the increased capacity, efficiency and performance made possible by the latest industry-standard interface and long sector technologies,” said Martin Larsson, Vice President, Storage Products Division, Toshiba Electronics Europe. “These additions to the MG04 series deliver an impressive 6TB capacity and continue to provide the benefits of Toshiba’s persistent write cache technology to enhance performance for business critical server and storage systems.”

The 6TB MG04ACA 6Gbit/s SATA and MG04SCA 12Gbit/s SAS models will be available in sample quantities in Q1 2015.
