IEC 60601-2-52:2009 applies to the basic safety and essential performance of medical beds intended for adults. This first edition cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC 60601-2-38, published in 1996, and its Amendment 1 (1999). This edition constitutes a technical revision. IEC 60601-2-52:2009 is the realization of much work in alignment, and scope adjustment between IEC 60601-2-38, EN 1970, and the third edition of IEC 60601-1.
There was a 36 month transition period for the new standard that went into place in December 2009. All new beds entering the market as of January of 2013 are required to meet the new standard.

As a result of the revision medical beds used in Europe require the use of H05BQF cable, which is EPR insulated flexible cable with a polyurethane outer jacket. Originally designed for industrial applications for motors and machines used in construction sites, the cable can be used in dry or wet areas subjected to medium mechanical damage and can better survive the rigors of hospitals than the PVC jacketed cables it has replaced.

As of June of 2012 EN60320 allowed for the approval of BQF cable with the C13 connector. MEGA is stocking 10A/250V rated cables for Continental Europe (P/N: 199-5BQF-3.0) and the UK (P/N: 209-5BQF-3.0) in lengths of 9.5 feet.
