The DF61 series from Hirose, which is now available from MSC offers advanced reliability for power supplies. It consists of headers, sockets and crimp contacts that have the capacity to handle up to 5A (amps) current rating. The connector range has been designed with space saving in mind; the two positions for example, only occupy 38mm² approximate board space.

The height profile is 2.38mm. Power performance is not compromised by the small size; a 5A maximum current rating per contact can be achieved using the 2 position connector with AWG22 wire.

Hirose’s ’Swing Lock’ offers a unique double locking mechanism. During the mating operation the receptacle is inserted into the header at a slight angle by offering the cable end in first, this engages with the positive lock. The mating operation is then finished by ‘swinging’ the other end of the receptacle in to engage with the friction lock which provides a tactile click sensation to confirm correct mating. It also prevents the receptacle from floating. The positive lock can withstand a minimum of 10N of cable pull force ensuring that the socket cannot be accidentally removed from the header. A small lever makes the un-mating process very quick and easy. A long effective contact mating length of 0.4mm ensures good electrical continuity. Durability is achieved with 30 mating cycles.

Blade contacts are used to prevent damage against any cable wrenching forces. On the crimp socket these are positioned within a strengthened housing lance to increase the retention further. On the header, the contacts are perfectly isolated to allow a long creepage distance that permits a high voltage capability of 350V. The terminations contacts on the header are fully molded into the insulator to eliminate any gaps to prevent solder wicking. A long effective contact mating length of 0.4mm ensures good electrical continuity. Ideal applications are robots, portable medical devices, LED lighting, servo amplifiers, gaming equipment and home appliances.
