A new low voltage 2 and 4 way link box for connecting and switching underground low voltage cables has recently been introduced by B&H, part of Tyco Electronics - Energy Products division. A patented modular assembly integrates single resin casting, snap-fit terminal cover, diving bell lid, and pit enclosure. This new modular concept significantly reduces the weight and size of the new link boxes, making them easier to install in areas where space is at a premium, while also reducing excavation and reinstatement costs.
The company’s new link boxes reduce the number of connections required, improving electrical connection and project longevity. A new cable core setting jig allows accurate conductor alignment before positioning the link box body, permitting easy access to cables and enabling better electrical connections. All internal connections are made with standard B&H-brand UET and BTCNE connectors featuring mechanical shear torque controlled technology. Assembly is error-proof due to torque and system control software and zero-fault technology.

The snap-fit terminal cover permits on-site single resin casting with live connections due to bespoke injection moulded shrouds. It also comes with printed colour and number phase identification, moulded resin bond area, and is topped by a clear vacuum-formed moisture and debris protector. Single resin casting eliminates moisture tracking and ingress problems resulting from multiple castings. It also reduces installation time and the volume of resin required. The cast iron diving bell lid with integrated moisture run-off and release system provides product integrity for up to a two meter head of water at 10 degree installation. The modular pit enclosure frame comes in 150mm deep sections for varying cable depths. It is housed in a galvanized metal frame and benefits from 100mm of movement for uneven surfaces. The cover can be supplied with or without concrete fill, allowing for on-site customization.

Further benefits of the new link box include a clear vacuum-formed body shell allowing both easy cable installation and inspection prior to resin fill. The shell is designed for crossing 300mm² cores with sufficient resin coverage. A unique injection moulded toolbox combines the functions of hiding the diving bell lid and storing out-of-service links with the bright yellow “Danger, live electrical apparatus” warning.

Designed for 3-core CNE cables (95 - 300mm²) and most LV cables (including those with full-sized sectorial neutral/earth conductors), new link boxes meet or exceed engineering recommendation C.81/4 BS7888 type approval for joints and 600/1000 volt cable systems, with the pit frame and cover meeting B125 EN124 standards. The complete kit comes untailed and includes casting shell assembly, cable setting jig, electrical connections, diving bell lid, toolbox, pit enclosure, galvanized frame and cover. A full set of required 82.5mm wedge links (three links with 2-way box and 12 links with 4-way) is also supplied.
