To provide plant engineers with a means of shielding equipment from solar radiation, Intertec has introduced a large cube-shaped sunshade for process instrumentation. Measuring 600x550x500mm, the CubeShade provides a 165l capacity shaded environment, allowing engineers to shade large or multiple instruments.

The sunshade is constructed from glass fibre reinforced Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC), which combines chopped glass fibres, fillers, polyester resin and a catalyst in a ready-to-mould composite. Although more cost-effective than glass reinforced polyester, SMC provides similar advantages, including a high resistance to UV and corrosion from salt and common petrochemicals, and a low thermal conductivity.

The sunshade’s single-part design and SMC-based construction facilitates production using automated moulding techniques. As standard, the body of the CubeShade is 5mm thick but incorporates 8mm thick reinforcing ribs around the rim and down the back of the unit, which help to channel rain.

While traditional instrument sunshades on the market consist of a single top shade, the CubeShade also incorporates structural side walls, allowing it to not only protect against overhead sun but also low-angle sun, wind, rain and snow.

The sunshade is suitable for shielding equipment such as electronic monitoring systems, explosion-proof junction boxes and analyser installations. The CubeShade can be mounted on a standard 2” pipe stand or attached directly to walls or steel structures, and is also available in an electrically-conductive antistatic version.
