A kit that enables a quick start into the development of cost-sensitive, compact Human Machine Interface (HMI) applications is now available at distributor MSC. The Renesas Starter Kit supports the semiconductor company’s RZ/A1 group of microprocessors (MPUs) that were launched in June 2013, featuring on chip SRAM of 3MB, 5MB or 10MB, depending on the version.

The MPUs are able to drive displays up to 1280x768 pixels resolution without the need for external RAM.

The Renesas Starter Kit features a development board with the MPU itself as well as connectors for CAN, Ethernet, camera interface, audio interface, SD card, USB 2.0 host and USB 2.0 function. In addition, it also includes a SEGGER J-Link Lite JTAG debugger, universal power supply and a PMOD debug screen to assist with application debugging. The kit is supplied with a 7-inch WVGA touch panel screen, so that systems designers can develop their own GUI directly on the development board.

Software support comes in the shape of ARM IAR IDE and the ARM DS-5 IDE. A free GCC compiler, supplied with the kit, enables programming to start immediately without additional costs for special software tools. More than a dozen different software examples that, including source code, will be available free to developers, ensure additional time and cost savings.
