Wide area sirens reach over 1km
Chesil Beach, a shingle beach in Dorset, England, which is renowned for flooding, has had its flood sirens upgraded. The Environment Agency has replaced the beach's existing sirens with wide area sirens, designed and manufactured in the UK by E2S Warning Signals. These A141 sirens are intended to warn those on the beach and in the town of flooding and evacuation.
When designing the sirens, E2S needed to consider the background noise levels on the 14 mile long beach. During a storm the noise levels of the waves, wind and shingle are very high. The A141 sirens were sounded on five occasions in January and February 2014 and people began to evacuate straight away.
The sirens can be sounded from the Environment Agency's incident room or lookout post by radio or key. Under normal conditions, the audible distances of the sirens from E2S can reach over 1km.
