UTC Swindon and National Rail are joining forces to celebrate National UTC Day and British Science Week on 18th March. To mark the two occasions, year 10 and year 12 students at UTC Swindon will take part in hands-on challenges that test their problem solving, communication, team building and leadership skills.

The teams will be mixed to give students experience of working together. The activities will exemplify how UTCs, working together with employers such as National Rail, instil confidence in their students. A recent survey found that 86% of UTC students nationally were confident they’d find a job suitable to their skills when they finish their education.

National Rail is one of over 90 industry partners involved with UTC Swindon. Benefits to students arising from the partnerships include real life challenge setting, equipment and component donations, inspiring presentations, mentoring and placements.

Looking ahead to 18th March, Angela Barker-Dench, Principal, UTC Swindon, said: “With National UTC Day falling within British Science Week this year, we have a wonderful opportunity to show what our students are capable of. It will also enable us to demonstrate the value our partnership with National Rail adds to the learning experience here at UTC Swindon.”

British Science Week takes place from 11-20th March 2016. A celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), it encourages teachers, science communicators and the general public to get involved in events and activities related to these subject areas.

During British Science Week 2015, more than 1.6m people took part in over 5,000 events across the UK. National UTC Day demonstrates the pivotal role UTCs play in preparing young people for careers in engineering and their importance for the future of British science.

UTC Swindon caters for 600 students aged 14 to 19, providing courses for young people who aspire to a career in engineering, computing and business. Students at the college gain skills demanded in all sectors of the engineering and computing industries.

As part of the original Great Western Rail works, the UTC Swindon site creates a link between the engineering history and the engineering and computing future of the local area, with the Old School Building and the iconic Water Tower featuring prominently. Both structures, which are Grade II listed, were treated sympathetically, with the Water Tower being restored and brought back into educational use.

UTC Swindon is run by a trust sponsored by Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells and Oxford Brookes University.
