Strategic Test has announced a new low-cost addition to its line of Freescale-based i.MX Computer-on-Modules. Called the TX-28S, it measures just 68 x 25 mm (2.6 x 1) and contains a 454 MHz i.MX283 processor coupled with 64 MB DDR SDRAM, 128 MB NAND flash memory and a 200-pin SODIMM connector.
The TX-28S is targeted at embedded fanless applications where low-price, small-size and low-power consumption are critical factors. In addition, the Freescale Longevity Program guarantees a long-term availability of 7 years.

The TX-28S is pin compatible with all Strategic Test's existing Freescale processor-based modules that use the i.MX257, i.MX27, i.MX287, i.MX515, i.MX535 and i.MX537. This approach has the advantage of providing the developer with the potential for creating scaleable systems. All modules can be supplied with the Development Kit-5 hardware reference platform that supports both Linux and Microsoft Windows Embedded CE 6.0.

As the latest member of our popular TX family, the TX-28S allows developers to design one baseboard that accepts different modules, commented Bob Giblett, President Strategic Test. This makes it simple to protect the design against obsolescence and provides a scalable solution. Freescale's Longevity Program combined with Strategic Test's long and reliable history makes the TX-28S an excellent solution for today and the future.

Other notable features of the TX-28S include:

• 10/100 Mbps Ethernet

• Two high-speed USB 2.0 ports

• True color LCD controller

• 4/5 wire Touchscreen interface

• Several peripheral interfaces:

o UART, SD-Card, I2C, PWM, Serial Audio, SPI

• Power management optimized for long battery life

• i.MX28 battery charger

• 3.3 V I/O

Highlights of the Development Kit-5:

• Socket for TX-28S / TX25 / TX27 / TX51 / TX53

• All pins from SODIMM brought out to header connectors

• UCB1400 CODEC and touchscreen controller

• Two SD card sockets

• VGA via D-SUB 15-pin connector

• LCD 40-pin header

• 10/100 Mbps Ethernet connector

• USB 2.0 connectors

• Two RS232 headers

• JTAG interface
