Siano Mobile Silicon and TIMI Technologies, the Chinese IP company assigned by China’s SARFT (State Administration for Radio, Film and Television) to manage the development of CMMB IP and Technology, have announced today that Siano is the newest member in the Next-Generation Broadcast (NGB) working group, referred to as NGB WG. This working group is aimed at establishing and defining the future of CMMB technology and networks, and is founded on the ideas and experience of the various ecosystem players in the current market.
/> CMMB is the mobile digital TV standard in China. It is deployed today in 330 cities in China – providing coverage to most of the urban population of the country. The service is offered via the China Broadcast Corporation (CBC) and China Mobile, the world’s largest mobile operator. The number of CMMB users so far is estimated to be over 10 million.

TIMI Technologies is an IP company, based in Beijing, which was exclusively nominated by China’s broadcast authority – SARFT (State Administration for Radio, Film and Television) to handle all aspects of IP Rights (IPR) related to CMMB. In addition, TIMI is also responsible for leading and steering the various technical committees and working groups related to the CMMB technology, in order to create a unified, standardized set of specifications to be used by the entire mobile community.

Siano has in the past signed an agreement with TIMI, which arranges the rights of Siano to develop and sell CMMB chips. The two companies have closely collaborated on many aspects of the CMMB deployment in China – and outside of China as well.

Hongbing Shen, TIMI’s CEO said, “Siano is one of the pioneers of the CMMB technology, and a company that has made a major contribution to the successful launch and deployment of CMMB over the last 3 years. We are happy to have Siano join the NGB working group, as it shows the company’s commitment not only to the current phase of CMMB, but also to its future. With Siano as a partner, we feel more confident about the success of NGB WG.”

“This step is an important milestone for Siano,” said Wei Wang, Siano’s VP Business Development for Asia. “Following our significant contribution to the first phase of CMMB, we see ourselves as one of the pillars of this market and as such it’s only natural that we will continue and push for the next phase of CMMB as well. As always, we believe that a successful market is established on the foundations of open collaboration between partners of the entire ecosystem, and this is exactly what NGB WG is set to establish.”

Siano is the largest supplier of CMMB receiver chips, serving a wide range of domestic as well as international handset makers and design houses such as Samsung, Motorola, ZTE, BYD, Compal, Dell, Garmin, Mitac, Huawei, OnTim, and many others.

Siano’s family of CMMB receivers allows crystal clear reception of CMMB signals even far away from the ground transmitters, as well as in deep indoor locations. It also allows excellent reception while traveling at high speeds in cities, as well as on highways. Supporting both terrestrial UHF and satellite S-Band signals, Siano's receivers are the only single-chip receivers that are ready for nation-wide deployment of CMMB via satellite or terrestrial S-band repeaters. Siano also offers the highest level of component integration enabling fast time-to-market and the lowest bill-of-material in the market.
