Point Grey has added two new 5 megapixel global shutter CCD models to its Grasshopper3 family of USB3 Vision cameras. The new Grasshopper3 GS3-U3-50S5 camera models are based on colour and monochrome versions of the Sony ICX625, a 2/3in. CCD sensor capable of streaming 2448 x 2048 resolution images at 15 FPS.

This combination of sensor format, resolution and frame rate have resulted in widespread adoption of this device in a variety of applications including optical inspection, 3D imaging, intelligent traffic systems and much more. The camera offers existing Sony ICX625 sensor users a transitional path to USB 3.0 without affecting optics or imaging performance.

It uses a proprietary USB 3.0 link layer and frame buffer-based architecture for optimal performance and reliability. An advanced image processing pipeline enables colour interpolation, look up table, gamma correction, pixel binning and USB3 Vision support.

"The ICX625 device offers an appealing combination of value and performance for applications requiring high resolution global shutter performance, ” says Michael Gibbons, Director of Sales and Marketing at Point Grey. “By enabling this device on our Grasshopper3 platform, users can combine USB 3.0 ease of use and high bandwidth with a well-known image sensor that many of our customers have already qualified in their applications.”
