Because the more common rotary solenoid devices use a spring to provide force for return operations, the available torque for forward operation is reduced in overcoming the strength of the spring itself. The use of an electrically driven permanent magnet rotor in the new device, provides fully energised torque which is available for the fastest rotation in either direction.
The bistable construction also allows the device to hold its end position at either limit of rotation with no power applied. This results in reduced heat dissipation which in turn permits higher power to be applied during the movement phase to enhance the speed of operation even further.
The new solenoid is designed to replace existing axial displacement and non-displacement devices in 40mm diameter. Other sizes will be available shortly.
