iSLI to host course on Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) presented by Steepest Ascent

The Institute for System Level Integration will host a 3-day course on Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing for Wireless Communications at their Alba Campus in Livingston on 14th-16th April 2008. The intensive course is presented by Steepest Ascent, a provider of DSP and digital communications solutions and consultancy, and covers everything from the fundamentals, advantages and disadvantages of the OFDM modulation to receiver synchronization techniques and case studies of cutting edge wireless standards.
iSLI is world-renowned as a provider of postgraduate education and research in the methodology and applications of system-on-chip design, system level integration and related software and hardware technologies. This latest course presents the necessary mathematical theory in an intuitive style, through the use of simulations and DSP demonstrations.

Suitable for engineers with knowledge of the fundamentals of DSP, basic communications or mathematics at bachelor level, the course covers key DSP algorithmic techniques for implementation of OFDM wireless systems, including the main components of an OFDM transmitter and receiver, the use of OFDM within various wireless standards and synchronization techniques for OFDM based systems.

During the course the advantages and disadvantages of OFDM over techniques such as spread spectrum will be explored alongside methods for channel equalization and channel coding. Attendees will also have the opportunity to consider the future evolution of OFDM systems towards more beamforming and MIMO systems.

The course comes at an exciting time in the development of OFDM as this bandwidth efficient digital modulation technique forms the basis of many wireless standards currently under development. In particular OFDM is found in the broadcasting world with DVB (Digital Video Broadcast) and DAB (Digital Audio Broadcast). Future evolutions of 3G (LTE) are also likely see the adoption of OFDM, as will different modes of the evolving ultra wideband “standards”.
