'Intelligent Stethoscope' project wins 2015 Soumac Award
South Coast-based Contract Electronics Manufacturer, Soumac Assembly Services, have announced Portsmouth University student Renata Costa, as the winner of the 2015 Soumac Award, for her 'Intelligent Stethoscope' project. The final year Telecommunications and Electronic Engineering student and her project stood out from a multitude of high-quality project submissions from Engineering students at Portsmouth University. Fellow Portsmouth student, Christian Mesmar, was runner up, for his satellite installation-aid project.
Soumac followed the two projects over the course of the year, observing how the two students overcame the challenges of taking a concept and turning it into a reality.
Renata's winning project aimed to capture accurately heart and lung sounds, to aid the diagnosis of potentially life-threatening conditions. The device measures and converts signals to a digital format; a stethoscope amplifying the sounds of the respiratory system, which can then be captured digitally and analysed further by medical professionals.
Commenting on the Award process, Costa said: “The Soumac Award was great moment for me as I felt recognised for all the hard work I'd put into the project. The company has provided me with great support and I am very happy that I took part in this competition”
Senior Lecturer of the Engineering Department at University of Portsmouth, Dr Rinat Khusainov said: “Partnerships with industry are extremely important for us as a University. It is also rewarding for us to see that Portsmouth engineering talent is highly regarded by industry. We are certainly looking forward to continuing collaboration with Soumac”
The Soumac Awards were introduced by Soumac in 2013 to recognise young talent and inspire passion within the electronics industry.
