AB Mikroelektronik, a subsidiary of TT electronics’ Components Division, has been presented with the Salzburg Award for Innovation in the Large Enterprises category for its outstanding work in the field of drive modules for hybrid and electric (HEV) vehicles. The company will now go forward for a national Austrian innovation award in 2011.
AB Mikroelektronik , a specialist in power electronics, impressed the jury with its innovative control unit for electric vehicles. A unit offering exceptionally high energy density and integrating safety features and a DC-DC converter was realised in a volume of just 3250cc. The winning design is a unit constructed for a KTM motorbike being launched early 2011. The compact control unit converts the high voltage of 300V for the motor control to 12V for controlling smaller electronic devices like horn, indicators and lights. AB Mikroelektronik and TT electronics Components Division also recently won a major contract to develop custom micro inverter/power electronic modules for Protean Electric’s in-wheel motors, the most advanced electric drive system for hybrid and battery electric vehicles.

According to the jury, “AB Mikroelektronik used innovative technical design to address key challenges facing the implementation of cleaner, more fuel-efficient transport in the 21st century. The outstanding engineering performance achieved is particularly remarkable in the context of the tight space constraints and the challenging thermal and mechanical environment of this application.” emphasised the jury.

Robert Rehrl, Sales Director at TT electronics AB Mikroelektronik said, “We are delighted with the award and look forward to the national awards in 2011.”

The award is granted by the Salzburg Economic Chamber for technical innovation in three categories: small, medium and large businesses, as well as to dynamic start-up companies. Peter Genser, vice president of the Salzburg Economic Chamber sees the award as a vehicle for innovation and investment: “We have often chosen winners that have justified the award with great success in the market. This award is a positive early detection system for top performance,” he said.

Technical experts from AB Mikroelektronik and other TT electronics companies will be available throughout Electronica on stand A6 321, 9th – 12th November.
