Shimadzu equipment for RoHS validation of components

Lambda UK, manufacturer of power supplies, has been using instruments from Shimadzu to test components for compliance with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS) directives, which came into effect at the beginning of July 2006.

Lambda uses Shimadzu' s Energy Dispersive X-Ray fluorescence spectrometer (EDX700HS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR) and UVmini-1240 absorption spectrophotometer for on-site verification of any component. The EDX detects elements like mercury, cadmium and lead, quickly and easily down to the ppm range. Other banned substances, like polybrominated compounds and hexavalent chromium, are identified with the FTIR and UVmini, respectively.

"We are using the Shimadzu equipment every hour of the working day," explained Richard Kenshole, Component Engineering Manager at Lambda UK. " It is very good to show our customers just how serious we are, and the savings we made from unlabelled components have already paid for the
equipment. The machines produce paperwork and html files in our database, so anything we've scanned is documented. The Shimadzu package of instruments and other measures we have implemented will provide confidence for customers of Lambda UK that we are meeting all the requirements of the
RoHS directive."
