Maxim's Chipset Eliminates Costly Current Transformers in Polyphase Energy Meters
Maxim has introduced a chipset, the MAXQ3108 and DS8102, that reduces the bill of materials (BOM) cost of a polyphase energy meter. Together, the MAXQ3108 and DS8102 replace three high-cost current transformers with three low-cost shunts to save both cost and space.
Integrated 2A MOSFET and Sense Resistor Provides Compact Hot Swap Solution
Linear Technology has introduced the LTC4217, a 2A integrated Hot Swap™ controller for protecting low power boards with load supply voltages ranging from 2.9V to 26.5V. Like other Hot Swap devices, the LTC4217 allows a board to be safely inserted and removed from a live backplane by limiting the amount of inrush current to the load supply during power up. Hot Swap controllers typically call for a number of supporting components.
Torex Integrates Synchronous Step-Down DC/DC with NMOS LDO
The new XCM519 multi-chip module from Torex Semiconductor integrates an XC9235/XC9236 synchronous step-down DC/DC converter with a high performance XC6601 NMOS LDO (low dropout) voltage regulator in a cost-effective, space saving package. The module meets the requirements of battery-driven applications such as mobile phones, PDAs, gaming devices and Bluetooth equipment, with the DC/DC converter providing a step-down from the battery, and this lower voltage feeding the NMOS LDO to provide a highly stable, low noise supply for the equipment's on-board processor's core.
Fully integrated current-limited load switch simplifies hot swap management
While designers of advanced portable systems with hot swap capabilities often need programmability to maximize protection, reverse blocking to control reverse current potentials and a fault flag to indicate over-current or over-temperature conditions, until now they could only add all three functions with a complex discrete approach. High Input Voltage Pre-Regulator with Output Current Limit for Battery Charger Applications
Linear Technology has announced the LT3653, a 1.2A, 1.5MHz monolithic current mode step-down switching regulator with a programmable output current limit. Typically, it is used with battery charger power path controllers to pre-regulate the output and optimize battery charger efficiency. Its wide operating input voltage of 7.5V to 30V makes the LT3653 ideal for a variety of input sources including unregulated 12V wall adapters, 24V industrial supplies and Firewire as well as automotive applications. Onboard input overvoltage lockout protects the device through input transients as high as 60V, such as those commonly found in automotive applications.
2A switching charger in compact 3x3mm package for feature rich mobile devices
AnalogicTech has introduced the AAT3620, said to be the industry's first fully integrated single-cell Lithium-ion battery charger capable of supplying up to 2A charge current in a small 3x3mm TDFN package. NXP Claims First Integrated Dimmable Mains LED Driver IC
NXP Semiconductors has announced the launch of the SSL2101 - the world's first integrated dimmable mains LED driver. The NXP SSL2101 is a small form factor Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS) controller IC specifically designed to drive LED devices and provide dimming capabilities to further improve the energy efficiency of LED lighting. The SSL2101 can drive lighting systems with variable power requirements which include LED retro-fit lamps, LED modules, LED spots, down-lights and LED strings for retail displays.

National Semiconductor has introduced a constant-current controller that enables off-line, uniform, flicker-free dimming of high-brightness light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with a conventional TRIode for Alternating Current (TRIAC) forward or reverse phase-control wall dimmer. The LM3445 TRIAC dimmable LED driver enables a full 100:1 range of dimming capability and can maintain greater than 1A of constant current to large strings of LEDs in a variety of residential, architectural, commercial and industrial applications.
TI hot-swap managers protect against current in-rush for voltages from 3 to 20 V
At the Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC 2009), Texas Instruments introduced three new hot-swap managers that help protect against over currents for voltage rails between 3 V and 20 V and an operating current of up to 5A.

NEC announces HSON-8 package for PowerMOSFETs in automotive applications
NEC Electronics Europe today announced the availability of a new package variant, HSON-8, for low-voltage PowerMOSFETs in automotive applications. The 6.0 mm x 5.2 mm x 1.45 mm HSON-8 package has the same footprint as an SOP-8 package. Compared with a DPAK (TO-252), this reduces mounting space by half, while maintaining the excellent thermal and electrical properties of DPAK packages.

The device's dropout voltage of 36mV typical is at least 20% lower than competitive products.

ON Semiconductor has announced that its NCP1081 and NCP1083 integrated Power-over-Ethernet Powered Device (PoE-PD) / DC-DC converter controllers have been verified to meet the upcoming IEEE802.3at standard for high power communications applications. Both devices have not only passed the IEEE 802.3af standard tests but have also been verified by the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) for the recent draft IEEE 802.3at (D3.1) standard - which includes a test of the two event physical layer classification.
