Fairchild's Primary Side Regulation PWM Controllers Reduce Space

News Release from: Fairchild Semiconductor
06 March 2009

Fairchild Semiconductor enables a simplified and highly efficient circuit design for battery chargers and power supplies with its series of primary-side regulation pulse width modulation controllers. These EZSWITCH primary-side-regulation controllers integrate a primary-side regulation PWM controller with a power MOSFET that can easily achieve tight constant voltage and constant current without complex secondary-side feedback circuitry.

Fairchild's Primary Side Regulation PWM Controllers Reduce SpaceBy using this approach versus the ringing choke converter (RCC) discrete approach, design is simplified, extra components are eliminated and total system costs including production, BOM and quality costs are reduced. The FSEZ1216 and FAN102 address the need for higher levels of efficiency as specified in ENERGY STAR® EPS 2.0 standard. This EPS 2.0 specification mandates a six percent efficiency-increase over EPS 1.1 to qualify for this label.

FSEZ1216 and FAN102 product imageThe EZSWITCH series minimizes standby power by <0.15W through its proprietary green-mode function that provides off-time modulation to linearly decrease the PWM frequency under light-load conditions. With a start-up current of only 10µA, these PWM controllers facilitate the use of a large start-up resistance for further power savings. In addition, the EZSWITCH™ series features a frequency hopping technique to meet EMI requirements in battery chargers for mobile phones and other portable devices.

Fairchild’s PSR PWM controllers are part of a comprehensive portfolio of power solutions that maximize energy-savings and enable systems to meet international energy-regulation requirements in applications such as power supplies, lighting, computing, industrial control and home appliances.
