OSRAM LEDs specified in new 3M Micro Projector
3M is including OSRAM Opto Semiconductors' LEDs in its new micro projectors, which can be connected to mobile phones and cameras. The small, bright, energy-saving diodes are the key to developing micro projectors, which could not be implemented with other light sources. Cypress - High-Accuracy CMOS Image Sensors Fly Into Space On-Board European Space Agency's Proba-2 Satellite
Cypress Semiconductor today announced three of its state-of-the-art CMOS Image Sensors for space applications are on-board the European Space Agency's (ESA) Proba-2 Satellite, which was successfully launched on November 2. Cypress's new HAS2 image sensor, specially designed for high accuracy star tracking, is implemented on a new Star Tracker developed by SELEX Galileo of Italy. The HAS2 image sensor is also being used in an extreme-ultraviolet telescope scientific experiment for solar corona observation. Additionally Cypress's STAR-250 image sensor is used on a new Digital Sun Sensor developed by TNO of the Netherlands. Both the HAS2 and STAR-250 devices were developed for the ESA by Cypress's Image Sensor Business Unit in Belgium.
Cree LED Lamps Selected for Initial 650 Store Deployment at Walmart
Cree has been selected to provide energy-efficient LED lighting to Walmart for new stores and renovations. Walmart plans to install Cree LRP-38 LED light bulbs in 650 stores during the first year, replacing ceramic metal halide in the produce and electronics departments. Cree's industry-leading LR6 recessed LED downlights are also being used in new construction applications.

Toshiba Corporation launches highly sensitive CMOS image sensor with BSI
Toshiba has announced the launch of a new CMOS image sensor that will bring 14.6 million pixels to digital still cameras and to mobile phones supporting video imaging. The sensor, the latest addition to Toshiba's "Dynastron" line-up, is also the company's first to integrate the enhanced sensitivity offered by back-side illumination technology (BSI). Sampling of the new sensor will begin in December and mass production will follow from the third quarter of 2010 (July--September).

The SQLightSensor is an ultra low noise near infrared Single Photon Detector based on a Geiger-mode InGaAs avalanche photodiode and an internal thermoelectrically cooler. The SQLightSensor includes a Geiger-mode InGaAs avalanche photodiode (APD) and a thermoelectrically cooler (TEC) that ensures high detection efficiency up to 25%, low dark count (5.10-6 per ns gate), high speed trigger up to 10 MHz, and low jitter. RGB laser driver squeezes embedded pico projectors into a new class of consumer electronics
Maxim has introduced the MAX3600, a 3-channel RGB laser driver that enables the integration of high-resolution pico projectors into small-form-factor applications. Fabricated using Maxim's newest BiCMOS process, this device achieves very fast switching times of < 2ns to support high-resolution images up to 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) and WXGA (1400 x 768 pixels). Additionally, it eliminates the need for three discrete laser drivers, thus enabling system designers to embed pico projectors into a new class of consumer electronics.

LED technology adjusts output as ambient conditions change
Following a successful trial of an innovative LED rail carriage lighting technology from Marl, Porterbrook Leasing Company estimates that the technology could not only save 20 million kWh, but also improve the ambiance and reduce maintenance costs. The announcement follows the completion of a £140,000 trial contract of Marl Sci-Light technology, arranged by distributor EAO, in which a 3-car Class 323 unit was equipped with the electronically controlled lights as well as data monitoring equipment to enable performance and energy consumption to be evaluated in detail.

Philips Lumileds continues to advance its core LED technology and recent breakthroughs implemented in the latest LUXEON Rebel LEDs for illumination applications improve efficacy and light output performance at luminaire operating temperatures. Hot / Cold Factor compares the light output of the LED at 100°C Tj and at 25°C Tj—which is how LEDs are specified on a datasheet. LEDs in a luminaire are operated at very high junction temperatures, often between 80°C and 110°C. As temperature increases, light output and efficacy decrease.
OSRAM develops direct emitting green InGaN laser with 50 mW
OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has achieved a major breakthrough in the laboratory with its direct emitting green indium-gallium-nitride laser. It already achieves an optical output of 50 mW and emits light in true green with a wavelength of 515 nm. Compared with semiconductor lasers based on current technology that operate with frequency doubling, direct emitting green lasers are more compact, offer greater temperature stability, are easier to control and have higher modulation capability.
