IPC Releases PCB Industry Results for August 2011
IPC — Association Connecting Electronics Industries announced the August findings from its monthly North American Printed Circuit Board Statistical Program. PCB Industry Growth Rates and Book-to-Bill Ratios Announced. Rigid PCB shipments were down 4.2 percent and bookings were down 6.5 percent in August 2011 from August 2010. Year to date, rigid PCB shipments increased 1.5 percent and bookings declined 9.6 percent. Compared to the previous month, rigid PCB shipments increased 13.7 percent and rigid bookings increased 15.4 percent. The book-to-bill ratio for the North American rigid PCB industry in August 2011 was at parity at 1.00.
Synopsys' DesignWare SuperSpeed USB 3.0 IP Achieves More Than 40 Design Wins
Synopsys announced that its DesignWare SuperSpeed USB 3.0 IP has surpassed 40 SoC design wins and more than 30 customer licensees worldwide. Because Synopsys' DesignWare USB 3.0 Digital Core and PHY IP has been broadly adopted by leading semiconductor companies targeting a variety of applications and process technologies, designers can be confident the IP is silicon-proven and can lower their SoC integration risk.
Cypress Reports Break Down of Talks Regarding Alleged GSI Patent Infringements
Cypress Semiconductor said that negotiations with GSI Technology, Inc. regarding the alleged infringement of Cypress's SRAM patents by GSI have ended without a resolution. In June, Cypress filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission alleging infringement by GSI of four of its SRAM patents. The complaint seeks an exclusion order from the ITC that would prevent the importation of all infringing GSI SRAMs. The ITC requires disputing companies to meet three times before the trial. Cypress's comments came in the wake of the first of these meetings.
Cogiscan Receives Major Order from ACD for Material Track, Trace and Control Solution
Cogiscan has received a major order from ACD. ACD invested in a factory-wide Track, Trace and Control Solution for all material, including printed circuit boards, electronic components, tooling (feeders, stencils) and consumables (solder paste, etc.) from receiving to shipping.The Cogiscan TTC Solution will replace ACD's incumbent MES software. Cogiscan was selected to replace the legacy system due to its proven track record to deliver on its commitments. The Cogiscan software architecture is very open for seamless integration with existing systems. This enables ACD to handle simple integration projects with internal development resources.

Industry increases UKESF scholarship support by 70 per cent Strategic Advisory Board calls for more engagement from the electronics systems community
The UK Electronic Skills Foundation (UKESF) has reported a 70 per cent increase in industrial support for the second year of its university scholarship programme. It now receives funding from 12 firms to award 51 UKESF Scholarships to elite electronics engineering undergraduate students - up from 30 in 2010. The comprehensive scheme includes bursaries, paid work experience, industrial mentoring and professional development workshops designed to help students make the transition from university to the workplace more smoothly.

Rigel donates safety testers to support Uganda charity initiative

Cambridge Consultants passes proof of concept stage using holographic radar missile scoring for US Defense program
Cambridge Consultants has successfully carried out proof of concept trials of its groundbreaking radar, pinpointing the impact of rapid shell fire for the US Department of Defense (US DoD). During trials the radar was able to measure the trajectory and burst points of shells fired from a naval gun at a rate of one every three seconds - the first time radar has been used this way.
UKESF wins Investment in Education and Training Award
The UK Electronic Skills Foundation has won the Education and Training Award at the annual e-Legacy Awards. The award recognised UKESF's initiatives to combat the threat of diminishing skills in the UK electronics sector, and was presented at an awards luncheon held at the prestigious Kensington Roof Gardens, London.
MDSL, has been listed among the Top-100 fastest growing UK private technology companies included in the prestigious Sunday Times Tech Track 100 league table.
MDSL was ranked at No. 65, with growth of over 49% in sales on the previous financial year.
