NEC to Begin 40nm Manufacturing
NEC Electronics Corporation today announced plans for the production of semiconductor devices utilizing 40-nanometer process technology at NEC Yamagata, its manufacturing subsidiary in Tsuruoka, Japan. The company is investing 10 billion yen this fiscal year (ending March 31, 2008) toward the purchase of an immersion lithography system and other leading edge equipment that will enable manufacturing of 55-nanometer and 40-nanometer devices. The equipment will be installed at the 300-millimeter wafer production line at NEC Yamagata.

HDMI Switch from STMicroelectronics Supports 3.4Gbps Data Rate to Enable 16-bit Color
STMicroelectronics has announced what it says is the first HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) switch in the world to support a video data-transfer rate of up to 3.4-Gigabits per second (Gbps), enabling full 16-bit color depth — 65k colors — to be maintained for a true high-definition (HD) picture. The STDVE003A is designed to be used in LCD and Plasma TV sets to provide multiple HDMI inputs for external program sources, such as game consoles, high-definition DVD players (Blu-ray and HD-DVD), and set-top boxes (STBs). In addition, its integrated equalizer is designed to overcome signal degradation when long (greater than 20m) and lossy cables are used.

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is the first testing and certification company to offer extensive international certifications for electrotechnical components and products used in industrial automation technology under the terms of the CB scheme. The CB scheme is an international system for certifying the safety of electrical and electrotechnical products that was launched by the international electrotechnical commission, the IECEE. The CB scheme facilitates the mutual acceptance of tests in the countries party to the multi-national IEC agreement. Until now, the CB scheme was used by testing organisations mostly to provide international certificates for consumer goods, for example as the basis for the GS testing mark. Underwriters Laboratories is now using the CB scheme for the first time to also certify electrotechnical components and industrial automation technology products for access to international markets. Toshiba develops new MRAM device which opens the way to giga-bits capacity

NI Extends Multicore to PXI and PXI Express Systems
National Instruments has announced the release of the NI 8352 and NI 8353 high-performance, multicore-based, server-class controllers for use in PXI or PXI Express systems. The NI 8352 and NI 8353 rack-mount controllers can be bundled with the appropriate MXI-Express or MXI-4 remote controllers for remote control of PXI or PXI Express chassis. The controllers offer high computing performance and make it easy to achieve high sustainable I/O bandwidth of up to 832 MB/s when bundled with a MXI-Express kit. RF Power Measurement systems detailed in new catalog
Coaxial Dynamics has released a 24 page Instrumentation Short Form Catalog. It contains over 500 individual products for configuring RF Power Measurement systems. The capabilities include Analog and Digital RF Power measurement from 100 mW up to 100kW in a bandwidth of 2 MHz up to 1.8 GHz. Intelligent Windows XPe cameras from Sony
Sony Europe's Image Sensing Solutions Division has announced it will preview additions to its XCI series of intelligent cameras at Vision 2007. This second generation series offers a more powerful 1GHz processor with MMX and SSE support. Designed to run an enhanced Windows XP embedded operating system, the units are ideal for software-based machine vision, security and traffic control applications. Two cameras will be added to the XCI family, a 1,280 x 1,024 SXGA and a 640 x 480 VGA model, each having B&W and colour variants.
Second generation family of IEEE 1394.b cameras from Sony
Sony Europe's Image Sensing Solutions Division has announced a series of IEEE 1394.b digital cameras today. The XCD line-up ranges from the XCD-V60, black and white (B&W) VGA resolution at 90 frames per second (fps) to the XCD-U100CR, a colour UXGA, 15 fps unit. A total of six new models have been introduced, each fitted with high quality Sony Semiconductor CCD sensors utilising 10-bit, EXview HAD or simple (Hole-Accumulation-Diode) HAD technology. With IEEE 1394.b interface support, the units suit machine vision use such as detail measurement, gauging, surface inspection and object recognition. They are also relevant for other high speed, networked vision applications that require the study of fast moving objects, such as traffic control.
Sony adds Power on Camera Link to 5Mpixel series
Sony Europe's Image Sensing Solutions Division has announced two additions to its XCL-5000 family of high-resolution industry-standard Camera Link equipped camera modules, the XCL-5005 and XCL-5005CR. The XCL-5005CR adds 5Mpixel colour capability to the product family. Designed for machine vision applications, they now feature selectable Power on Camera Link (PoCL) capability. PoCL provides power to the camera over the Camera Link interface cable and allows for flexibility of customer configuration. Units can be powered using PoCL or by a separate 12V DC supply. Using the PoCL function, the compact cameras can be installed in physically small spaces such as inside robotic arms and semiconductor pick-and-place machines.
NI Introduces High-Performance Smart Camera Family
National Instruments has announced the NI 1722 and NI 1742 Smart Cameras to provide engineers and scientists with high-performance systems at a low cost. Smallest licensable 32-bit processor core from Tensilica
Tensilica has introduced the industry's smallest licensable 32-bit processor core based on an industry-standard architecture. The new Diamond Standard 106Micro core takes up only 0.26 mm2 in a 130-nm G process and only 0.13 mm2 in a 90-nm G process, which makes it smaller than the ARM7 or Cortex-M3 cores, yet at 1.22 Dhrystone MIPS/MHz, it delivers higher performance than the ARM9E cores.

Texas Instruments has announced that its audio digital signal processors (DSPs) are the first embedded implementation approved with DTS-HD master audio at 192 kHz for unparalleled audio quality in home theater systems. Powersolve backs attempt to power across the driest place on Earth
Powersolve has backed one man's attempt to power his way across the driest place on earth. 35 year old Neil Wilkie has trekked across the notorious Atacama Desert in northern Chile on the second stage of his four-year plan to cross some of the most demanding places on the planet. Last year's first adventure saw Neil take on the Gobi Desert in a similar seven day test of his physical and mental endurance. During his crossing Neil (pictured during his Gobi crossing) had to cope with temperature extremes from 40ºC of heat to well below freezing at night.
